Metallurgy Research Centre

Structural Characterization, Defectology and Defect Analysis

Metalografía Metalografía Metalografía

The activities carried out by this area include both, certification work and short to medium term studies, as well as research and development projects related to new material developments and applications along with defect characterizations. These studies meet the needs put forward by the customer and are designed with the aim of providing the most appropriate and efficient response.

The metallurgical area has a team of technicians experienced and specialized on each type of material and/or production process.

We have an electronic microscopy section which, apart from covering the needs of the studies considered, also allows for performing other types of specific analyses such a determining the chemical nature of products occluded in different materials, may they be metallic or not (plastics, glass, etc.), characterization of particles in filters, analysis of pollution and deposits on surfaces, etc.

If necessary, our technicians can visit companies to perform these diagnostic tasks on site. Chemical composition, hardness and structure determinations, together with micrographs by means of replicas and the measurement of ferrite in stainless steel, can be performed using portable equipments.

1. Certification tests

  • Grain size of steels.
  • Depth of steel decarburisation.
  • Coating thickness.
  • Determination of non-metallic inclusions in steels.
  • Structural classifications of castings (grey, spheroidal, vermicular, malleable, bainitic).
  • Microstructural analysis of non-ferrous alloys.
  • Microstructural analysis of tool steels.
  • Micro-inclusions. Level of cleanliness in steels.
  • Macro-inclusions (macro figure) in laminated steel products.
  • Determination of ferrite en in stainless steels via magnetic induction.
  • Macroetching. Forge forming.
  • Porosity estimate using image analysis.

2. Short to medium term studies or projects.

These meet the needs or requirements put forward by the customer. The following aspects can be highlighted among the issues most frequently tackled:

  • Defects inherent to the steel, iron and aluminium casting and solidification process.
  • Defects associated to the different transformation processes (lamination, forging, stamping,…).
  • Embrittlement phenomena.
  • Defects due to fatigue.
  • Corrosion failures.
  • Machinability problems and machining defects.
  • Defects in cast components.
  • Welding defects.
  • Scanning electron microscope, with controlled and environmental pressure mode, equipped with energy dispersive X-ray microspectrometer.
  • Optical microscopes equipped with image analysis systems.
  • Equipment for metallographic preparations (precision cutters, polishing instruments, embedding machines, electrolytic etching, etc,…).
  • Stereoscopic magnifier.
  • Magnetic induction ferrite meter.
  • X-ray fluorescence thickness measurement equipment.
  • Magnetic induction thickness measurement equipment.
