“Effect of the Si content and solidification rate on the weldability and high temperature properties of IN718 investment castings”
The results of this research work performed by AZTERLAN Metallurgy Research Centre, LORTEK and the company EIPC (Eibar Precision Casting) will be presented at the upcoming 31st International Conference of the European Investment Casters’ Federation to be held on May in Santander (Spain).
IN718 is the most widely used Ni-based superalloy due to its outstanding performance at working temperatures up to 700°C under high structural loading and corrosive conditions. This alloy also shows excellent weldability, making it suitable in large aicraft engine structures and components joined by welding technologies.
To optimize the features offered by this commercial alloy and to overcome the microstructural instabilities presented at higher temperatures, a comprehensive research work was performed by AZTERLAN, LORTEK and EIPC within the HIPERTURB H2020-JTI-CleanSky2 Euroepan project. A multi-faceted approach has been put in practice, starting with the optimization of the chemical composition and improving/adjusting different process key parameters in the melting and heat treatment operations.
Based on this research work, the results of the study of the impact of silicon content and solidification rate on the weldability and high temperature properties of IN718 investment castings will be presented at the 31st International Conference of the European Investment Casters’ Federation which will take place in May 2022 in Santander (Spain).
