The Non Destructive Tests is a group of analytical techniques used to control and guarantee the internal/external soundness of a material or component. Some of these techniques allow to define the real volume of defects within the parts, offering very precise information on their state.

The contribution of the Non Destructive Tests to the different areas of AZTERLAN allows to improve the design and development phases of certain components, the set up and optimization of manufacturing processes, as well as a correct follow up of research and development programs.

AZTERLAN provides a recognized experience and expertise on the different NDT techniques performed with the latest technologies available in the market.

The following Non Destructive Tests are carried out in AZTERLAN, among others:

1. Ultrasound test (on-site tests).

  • Ultrasonic inspection and contact techniques to control internal soundness of nodular iron cast components for the wind energy sector.
  • “Time of flight diffraction” (TOFD) technique as a method to detect and dimension internal defects in butt-welding.
  • Contact ultrasonic tests for welded joint inspections.
  • Ultrasonic inspections and contact techniques to control railway components.
  • Tests on materials, forged steel, laminated steel, cast steel,…
  • Preparation of ultrasound test procedures by accredited level 3 technicians.

2. Magnetic Particle testing.

  • Surface crack detection in forged components and fastening elements.
  • Detection of defects in nodular cast iron components.
  • Control on pieces of several sectors, such as wind power, railway, machine tool, automotive industry.
  • Preparation of magnetic particle test procedures by accredited level 3 technicians.

3. X-Ray radioscopy and computerized axial Tomography.

  • Controls of safety components for the automotive industry.
  • Sample-taking tests for process control with image records.
  • Tomography tests on aluminium, steel, cast iron and plastic materials.
  • 2D X-ray images, 3D reconstructions.
  • Quantification of the porosity percentage, dimensioning and location of internal defects.
  • External and internal dimensional measurement.
  • Design reconstruction for application in reverse engineering.

4. Dye Penetrant Inspections.

  • On welded joints.
  • Aluminium components.
  • Stainless steel pieces.
  • Preparation of dye-penetrant tests by accredited level 3 technicians.
  • On-site testing and in the fluorescent self-emulsifying penetrant facilities.
  • 450KV CT-COMPACT industrial tomography equipment.
  • TOFD (Time Of Flight Diffraction) equipment with Phased Array up to 128 channels, with A, B, C and S-SCAN representations.
  • Radioscopy installation with 2 tubes, 160 and 320KV, and image processing.
  • Conventional ultrasonic equipments of the main market trademarks.
  • Portable Phased Array equipment with B-SCAN representation.
  • Magnetic particle equipment, 600 WE universal test bench, electromagnetic yokes.
  • Installation for immersion in water washable fluorescent self-emulsifying dye-penetrants.
